The Tale of Samantha The Magenta Skunk
"In
fact, although we consider the Samantha Skunk Program a key component of
our early elementary prevention curriculum here in Dover, the impact of
the lesson is actually more immediate and much more obvious on the student
teachers that are presenting the lesson"
Dana Mitchell, Captain
Commander, Support Services Division
Dover, N.H.
"The animated program is a change from the"gloom and doom"no-smoking programs that existed in the past"
Mary Gorman
Nausha Health Department
Nashua, N.H.
"I liked how it teaches kids not to smoke in a fun way."
Pamela M. Lane, MPH
Health Educator Senior, Commonwealth of Virginia, Three Rivers Health District
"Parents who want to keep their children from using tobacco should begin their efforts as soon as kindergarten"
Gerald S. Berenson
Tulane University Medical Center
"The Samantha Skunk program is an excellent one. Unlike most prevention curriculums, this story requires that the elementary students participate, This key element of interaction ensures that the audience pays attention, stays involved and is more likely to retain the information presented. The teen volunteers are also fond of this because it energizes the audience and the performers"

"The
problem of educating such young children (relative to tobacco use) is that
it can be difficult to incorporate the complexity of tobacco education
into an age-appropriate lesson. I have found 'The Tale of Samantha Skunk:
Why Smoking Stinks' a fantastic way to introduce children to the complex
issues surrounding tobacco use."
John Stein, Medical Student
Tobacco Use Prevention
Dartmouth Medical School

"The tale of Samantha Skunk:
Why Smoking Stinks"
is a program that brings peer student leaders to
youth groups and classrooms as lovable magenta skunks. They connect with
the children by reading to them from a jumbo-sized book dressed as Samantha
Skunk.
This unique program is the first to bring pre-school and primary school
children an anti-smoking message they can easily remember.
The Story of Samantha Skunk is designed to influence 5, 6, and 7 year
old children to refrain from smoking.

"Smoking stinks like camel's breath!!!!"
If this chant is ringing through the halls of classrooms
full of 5, 6 and 7 year olds, it is likely Samantha Skunk has paid them
a visit. Samantha Skunk is an over-sized magenta critter who teaches children
to scream this popular chant every time they hear the word "smoking."
