The children are immediately in awe of the brightly colored skunk as soon as she makes her entrance.
As the children interact with the story, their attention is on Samantha Skunk and her message. Samantha Skunk explains what the children need to know to understand the story and then she reads the book aloud to them.
After the story, the children engage in an active discussion with Samantha Skunk, teachers and health professionals. They discuss the harmful effects of smoking and why they should never start.
Samantha Skunk has taken on Joe Camel by encourag-ing children not to smoke. Samantha Skunk and the "uncool" smoking camels, Stu and Stela Stench, were created by Professor of Business, William Scott, at the University of New Hampshire.
He was inspired to create Samantha as a "no smoking" symbol by his daughter who suffers from asthma. Now Samantha Skunk is delivering that message personally to as many children as possible.
Samantha Skunk relates to children at a level they can understand and take part in, which has proven to be a strong motivator. The most convincing proof of retention is to hear a roomful of children enthusiastically belt out the message for weeks and months after Samantha's visit.
